Norpro 1.5 Gallon Stainless Steel Jumbo Compost Keeper

Norpro 1.5 Gallon Stainless Steel Jumbo Compost KeeperI have had this compost keeper for a few weeks now and I am happy to report that it works exceptionally well! I wanted something that looked good enough that I could leave it on my counter, but that would not take up to much space, smell bad, or attract fruit flies. This container fulfills all of these requirements. After reading through other canister reviews it seemed like several people had trouble with either loose or tight fitting lids. The lid on mine fits perfectly!! I can open it with one hand, but it does not rattle around at all. The pivoting handle has also been very helpful when carrying it outside to the large compost bin. This canister is also the perfect size being 1.5 gallons. Our previous 1 gallon plastic container often filled up a bit to quickly that it required frequent emptying; not to mention it absorbed a great deal of odor, which this keeper does not. It seems like the 2 gallon container would fill up to slowly that things would start to decompose to much in the house before needing emptying. The 1.5 is the perfect compromise between the two and does well with emptying approximately once a week. The odor filter also works better than I even thought it would. I have been exceptionally happy with this compost keeper and hopefully you will be too!

I''m very disappointed in this compost pail. It''s handsome, solid stainless steal, but it''s a fruit fly factory! The lid is poorly designed--it contains a large chamber that holds a charcoal filter, which as it turns out is an excellent media for fruit flies to lay their eggs upon--and holes for them to escape. The eggs hatch and then the new fruit flies exit the lid through the air holes in the top--right into your kitchen. Lots of flies mind you. Nasty! I tried dumping the pail more frequently, washing the whole thing out periodically, etc. Nothing really worked to cut down on the fruit flies getting loose in the house. The only solution I''ve come up with is to wrap the whole lid in aluminum foil. This keeps the flies from getting into the lid charcoal chamber and out the vent holes. It works, but defeats the purpose of having an expensive, nice looking compost pail. If I had to do it over again I would get a cheaper pail without holes in the lid.

This is a great counter top composter. I''ve had it on my counter for the past three months and I have yet to see a fruit fly or smell an awful smell. I''m very happy with this product. If you''re worried that you won''t use it or that it will smell, you''re sadly mistaken. Just place this container next to your cutting board and you''ll be so happy that you have it. No more running out to the trash with half full bags because you chopped an onion. I can honestly say I''ve started eating more vegetables and fruit because I own this product.

This is the perfect size for my household (two adults who go through a lot of veggies, eggs and other similarly compostable material) it appears to be larger than average as far as lidded compost bins go, but it''s absolutely the thing for my house. The lid fits well, but even if it was loose, we''re using degradable compost bags with the keeper (Norpro Degradable Compost Bags, 50 Pieces), so there''s no issues at all there. The bags go perfectly with the bin, and all in all it makes such an excellent alternative to our old, awful and stinky "solution" of piling up our food scraps in some random container and then dumping it into the food waste bin outside. No stink yet, no flies, no mess. The lid picks up fingerprints, but if that''s its only issue, I''m happy. It seems very sturdy; sturdier than the photograph made it appear, even.

I bought this product several weeks ago from Amazon to replace a plastic bin that had cracked. Although I think it is expensive, it is sturdy and a good value. It has no parts to break or wear out and should last forever (or very close). It is well made with a good-fitting lid. Being stainless steel, it does not retain odors and it holds a lot so you do not have to empty it often. We have a septic system so I use my garbage disposal sparingly. All of our food wastes go into this pail (I cook family meals daily), and I only empty it a couple of times per week into a recycle trash bin. The handle is very useful. I use 3-gallon compostable bags (BioBag) to line the pail and they fit perfectly inside. I highly recommend this product.
