The previous reviewer did not make a "false judgement". The fact that this filter is white and NOT grey as is pictured should signal that something is clearly wrong. I''ve owned 2 genuine Matrikx filters, I know Matrikx filters and this sir, is no Matrikx Pb1 filter. The real filters are manufactured by a company called KX Technologies in Connecticut. Their filters are GREY and their filters are stamp embossed with the company name: KX Technologies and MADE IN THE USA. The filter shipped by Purenex has no such stamp. It came with a generic paper label that says "Block Activated Carbon Water Filter". As insult to injury, the filter doesn''t even work. I can very strongly taste the chlorine in my NYC tap water flowing through the filter system so I''m not convinced that it''s even doing any filtering. Purenex is trying to sell this filter, which isn''t even a knock-off -it''s just a generic piece of crap, instead of the real thing. Save yourself some money, aggravation and perhaps your health by ordering from another storefront that sells the genuine KX Tech Matrikx filter (it may cost a bit more, but it''ll be worth it). I''ve contacted the seller about returning this and I''ll update my review with my experience with them.

After writing this review, and buying the genuine item from another vendor, I realized that this product page spans all Amazon sellers, not just Purenex, which in at least two cases has been dishonest. So my rating has changed from 1 star to 5. This product, the Matrikx Pb1 made by KX Technologies, is Superb. It''s probably the best filter out there. But the filter sold by Purenex is a generic piece of crap. Purenex did send me a full refund for my purchase. But anyway... Before you order, contact the seller and make sure the filter you''ll receive is manufactured by KX Technologies.

Manufactured by the KX Industries Inc. in Orange Connecticut, The Matrikx+PB-1 is your best buy for a replacement cartridge. There are 10 inch lengths and 20 inch lengths. There are 2 1/2 diameter filters and 4 in diameter filters. In my case I use a 10 inch by 2 1/2 replaceable cartridge for my countertop filter. I search for dealers with the best price. In this case Amazon has everyone beat. The Matrikx +PB-1 is a great heavy duty filter, among the best all around. I have been using them for many years.

I use this filter along with the Watts 500315 Counter-Top Drinking Water Filter unit and it works great. Water tastes like it''s bottled and I can tell when the filter is at it''s life''s end as the water begins to taste like it''s right out of the tap, no filter, which has a pond water characteristic and cues you that something isn''t quite right. I live in a old mining town and after three months is up I look at the filter and think to myself, "I''m glad that stuff went through the filter and not through me!" as the filter is orange at the expiration. This is a low-cost water filter solution and beats buying expensive bottled water from the store and is about the same cost as Brita filters, but no pitcher to wash.

I see the following pros -

1) Far better performance at lead removal than the pitcher based ones like Brita. Note they claim 99% lead removal. Brita gives you no number.

2) Much cheaper than filters like Brita note this can filter anywhere from 1000 to 2500 gallons of water. Cost per gallon is minimal and far less than the pitcher based ones.

3) Activated carbon works well and makes fresh tasting water.

4) Fast flow rate don''t have to wait like you do with the Brita. Especially useful when you have guests and need water instantly.

Other notes -

Seems to be the same as Sears/Kenmore 34377 and costs almost the same if you factor in shipping.

I am yet to find a better countertop filter. If you know of one, please comment.

I recently installed three different water filters all together under my kitchen sink:1) Culligan D-10A Level 1 Drinking Water Replacement Cartridge Carbon-Impregnated Cellulose (2 filters for $10); 2) Pentek EP-10 Carbon Block Filter Cartridge (9-3/4" x 2-7/8"), 5 Micron ($12.50) & 3) KX MATRIKX Pb1, Extruded Carbon Block -0.5 micron Water Filter Cartridge, 06-250-125-975 (was $17). I used 3 inexpensive Culligan water filters housings to plumb my system. I used a simple PVC water valve to adjust (slow) the water through my last 2 drinking water filters. My plumbing has the cold water at sink tap going through 1st filter: The Culligan''s Carbon-Impregnated Cellulose filter. ... Then that filtered water is plumbed to also feed my drinking water facet through 2 additonal filter housings which had in line the Pentek EP-10 (5 micron) carbon block filter, then the better KX MATRIKX Pb1 (0.5 micron) carbon block filter.

I tested the hot water & cold water at sink tap, and then my drinking water at separate drinking water tap with a TDS water quality tester (HM Digital TDS-4 Total Dissolved Solids Pocket Size Meter). I was surprised to find my TDS (total devolved solids) was slightly higher at my drinking water tap which is channeled through 2 additional carbon block filters than the cold water sink tap going through just the cheaper Culligan filter. I measured 125 TDS on hot water side of facet that has no filtering; 90 TDS at cold water sink facet going through just the Culligan cellulose filter; and 92 or 93 TDS at drinking water tap running through the two additional carbon block filters. This was after flushing the filters for the recommended 5 minuets (I likely did 10 minutes, then used setup for a week). I wondered why the TDS test results would be higher after going through the two additional carbon block filters??? Testing some more: When I took the Pentek EP-10 (5 micron) carbon block filter out of the 2nd postion housing and left that housing empty, ... I got the results I wanted to see. The TDS then measured at 87 at drinking water tap. That was 3 less TDS than the cold water sink tap) going through only the Culligan Carbon-Impregnated Cellulose Filter.

While I have not done further tests, I suspect the Pentek filter might be below par and somehow added TDS to my drinking water setup. These test results were on filters that were all replaced about one week earlier. I believe the KX MATRIKX Pb1 (0.5 micron) filter is worth the extra money. The cheaper Culligan certainly does some good filtering of TDS too, but the KX MATRIKX provide better tasting water. I would test these filters out more if I was getting paid for it. I won''t be buying the Pentek brand again unless they supply me with a new filter that gets better TDS test results. TDS test might not represent the full picture.
