Bazooka Screen For brew kettle or mash tun

Bazooka Screen For brew kettle or mash tunThis is a screen for people who want to modify their brew kettle to avoid clogs when draining their chilled wort. The long screen gives plenty of surface area to allow liquid intake even after some hops stick to it (unlike a small screen over just the exit hole which will quickly clog from even a small amount of hops material).

The screen resists crushing from the output pressure, which would pinch the tube shut and render much of its length useless. In other words, when there is hops stuck to the screen near the exit point the tube will stay open and allow the screen to still draw in liquid from progressively further down the tube.

If you use a lot of pelletized hops you *may* find you can get clogs anyway if there is enough hops matter to clog the screen all the way to the end. I don''t typically hop very heavily, nor am I boiling for bigger than 5 gallon batches, but I''ve heard this is no guarantee. One solution is to silver solder two of these screens to a T connection so that you have a screen along the edge on both sides of your output, which obviously doubles the amount of material that can be filtered before clogging. Another reason to do this beside that obvious one (or to at least put it on an elbow if you only want / need 1 screen) is it keeps the input away from the center of your kettle. That way after your wort chills you can stir it into a whirlpool so the cold break collects in the center and be able to get a lot more clear wort before the coagulated proteins head for you fermenter.

I do not personally recommend this screen for your mash tun, or at least my (round) mash tun. I''m of the school that a false bottom will provide better efficiency, as sparge water will pull through the entire grain bed more evenly. I do know there are brewers who do just fine with a screen though so you''ll have to evaluate what''s going to work for your specific tun.

I have been using these screens for two years. I have them installed on 2 pots (mash tun and boil kettle) I have brewed at least 100 batches with this set up and never came across stuck mash or screen clogs as mentioned by the 2 star rating. I am buying new ones because they wore out over time, they served their purpose handily and for $15-20 every 2 years, I can deal with that over a $180-200 false bottom that will do the same thing. All I have to say to the 2 star rating is slow down your transfer rate and you will not get stuck screens.

I purchased this to use in my 10 gallon rubbermaid cooler mash tun, and it works great! I''ve used it to brew 4-5 times now, and it is incredible easy to use. I purchased it because I was not yet ready to lay down the cash for a false bottom, but now I don''t know if I''ll ever switch.

It is also very easy to clean. I just run water through the inside, then let it dry. When dried I just shake off the excess grain, and wait till the next brew. Very solid purchase.

I needed the kettle screen (plus 1 weldless kettle valve) for a quick DIY mashtun, using a 5 gal Igloo beverage cooler, for homebrewing beer. The screen worked great at separating the spent malted barley from the wort. I did have to buy an extra bushing at my local hardware store in order to screw the threaded end of the kettle screen into the valve. Easy fix though.

Converted my 5 gallon round igloo cooler to a masher and this worked out well for straining only liquid and no grains. It was a bit bigger than the 5 gallon igloo cooler but a little bending was easy and it works fine.
