The scraper does need to be mounted as it is tall and top heavy and will tip over in use unless you have a child''s shoe in the scraper. ONE big advantage of the scraper being tall is you can slip the toe of your boot/shoe under the entire scraper but between the plywood board we have it mounted on and lift the entire scraper and board to move it around to better position it or to sweep up under it every so often. I have size 13 shoes/boots and my boots slip between the scraper and the plywood easily.
The bad is the welding on this scraper looks like it was done by a beginner and is very poorly done on the 45 degree supports on the underside. The good news is the scraper is built like a tank and will last just as long and serve just as well. The two flat metal strips that serve as feet were not level and wobbled so I had to bend the supports to get it to stand right on level cement (before the board was mounted) which caused the powder coating to come off at the welds.
The "Kick Away" label was put on with a crease/wrinkle and was crooked. I tried to straighten it and hoped to reapply it but ended up being unable to salvage it for reapplication. The "Kick Away" label was on one side of the scraper only which was nice in that you could face it either way depending on if you like the label showing or not. Both the front and the back of the scraper are identical.
It is too bad the welding on the leg supports are so poorly done. Otherwise, this is a solid American hand-crafted quality item that can be handed down for many generations.

This thing is awesome. When they say "heavy duty" they''re not kidding! The steel is THICK and strong. The brushes are rigid and stiff and do a terrific job of scrubbing the grit out of my tennis shoes before stepping onto the doormat and onto our hardwood floors. That grit is like sandpaper on our floors, particularly when it''s rainy out.My only complaint is the screws provided for mounting the device. It *WILL* have to be mounted to use, otherwise it will tip and rock as you try to clean your shoe, and you won''t be able to get much accomplished. The screws are pretty "fat" and have a phillips head. I tried to drive the first screw into my deck using my cordless drill and stripped out the head. The next screw I put in after having drilled a pilot hole, but I still spun it before it was 100% cinched down. It would have made much more sense had they included hardened hex-head lag bolts for mounting. I ended up using lag bolts I bought at the hardware store. A template would have been helpful too, along with maybe some brief mounting instructions...
Despite the cheap-o mounting screws, lack of template or instructions, I still give this thing five stars. It''s just that good!Every now and then you purchase a product that is what it says it is. As a bonus the company was more than responsive in shipping it out. This product is very well built and works like a dream! It must be screwed down to use. I used the large screws that came with it to screw it to a board so I did not have to put four large holes in my deck. I then used a couple of small deck screws to attach the board to the deck. It makes it very easy to move it around if desired. I have an outdoor wood boiler which spews soot which gets in the cleats of my shoes and then was getting tracked into the kitchen and causing my wife great consternation. I tried to wipe them on a mat but it was not effective and taking shoes on and off every time was not practical. This boot cleaner does a perfect job and we are both delighted! Thanks! This is without a doubt the best boot cleaner I have ever used. Its heavy duty construction really gets the dirt and grime off of your boots. The side brushes get off the mud that creeps up the side of your boots.
