I''d give the Airpura R600 a 4.5 star rating if I was permitted to use fractional values. At a list price of $600 the Airpura R600 competes in the premium air purifier market with competitors such as IQair, Blueair, Airgle, and a few other manufacturers. The R600 employs three filters: a prefilter than lasts ~1 year and costs ~$35 for a pack of 2, a high grade HEPA filter that lists for $170 and lasts for ~5 years, and an 18 lb activated carbon filter that lists for $200 and lasts ~2 years. At list prices, the cost of filters averages $151.50/ year, but the carbon filter is refillable which allows those willing to go through extra effort to shave a bit off the cost (18 lbs of activated carbon will run in the ballpark of $120). This makes the operating costs of the R600 pretty reasonable compared to its competition; for example, a Blueair 650E has filter costs of $300/year (if using the smokestop filters). Moreover, the included filters, except for the cheap prefilter, will not need replacing for 2 years making the initial purchase price quite reasonable; by comparison, the Blueair filters only last 6 months. The R600 is designed to be a workhorse and has few bells and whistles: it has no remote, no sensors, no automation, no way to monitor filter age, etc.; however, many users will not miss these features. Although it lacks some frills found in other products, this is a solid well-designed machine, with an all metal case and a powerful motor. It does have a continuous dial to adjust the fan speed whereas most competing products only feature 3 or 4 discrete speed settings. 3 casters allow the machine to be easily moved from room to room. At the lowest speed the unit has a noise level of 28 dB when measured at six feet; this is relatively quiet but not "whisper" quiet and it would not make a good choice for a bedroom unit for someone very sensitive to noise. Six feet seems like a large distance to measuring sound levels at; by comparison Blueair reports sound levels at 1 meter, nearly half the distance Airpura uses. Using standard laws for the damping of sound with distance, 28 dB at 6 feet would correspond to 33 dB at 1 meter. When compared to comparably sized air purifiers the R600 is among the quietest and for daytime use the low setting (or even an intermediate setting) will not be at all distracting. On the high setting the noise level is 62 dB, which is very loud, but this would be true of any air purifier putting out 440 cfm of air. Energy usage is reasonable for a unit of this size, ranging from 40 W on low to 120 W on the highest setting. If you are in the market for a high quality air purifier suitable for large rooms, the R600 will meet your needs and do so with very reasonable operating costs. I would have preferred the inclusion of some air quality sensors, even if this raised the price, but was convinced to purchase it anyway due to the excellent filtration capabilities and the low yearly filter costs.

Works great, really scrubs the air nicely. Has a nice solid hum. Needs to be on medium to really start pushing some air. Seriously fresh air.

The Airpura R600 Air Purifier was purchased to remove cigar odor from the house when I entertain. I was looking for something that would sweep the air and remove the smell. It is good looking, but very loud. I had to turn up the volume of the television in order to hear the show. The noise is quite offensive. I thought that it would be quiet, no where in the product description did it give decibel levels or mention how loud it would be. As far as removing the smell of my cigars, I think it fails miserably. The room still smells of cigars the next day, you notice it as soon as you enter the house. I have followed the directons and have the machine running 24 hours a day as stated for maximum effectiveness.
